Pros and Cons of standard Computer-on-Modules for customized solutions



COM is dividing the processing and the interface part of a mainboard into 2 separate items: a computer (including processor, chipset and RAM) which is a pluggable module and a carrier which is containing the I/O interfaces. The benefits of this solutions is that standard off the shelf COM modules can be used even in a customized solution. The customization is limited to the carrier only. This results in reduction of development, and verification and certification time. But, what are the advantages and disadvantages of mainboard versus COM modules with customized or modular carriers and what are the pros and cons of an integrated COM system solution vs choosing piece parts from different vendors. Which solution is ideal in terms of quantity, complexity, project duration and long-term availability.
