Nine Steps to Choosing The Right Coding Standard

Selecting the right coding standard is an essential building block for safe and secure coding. While superficially many coding standards and automatic analysis tools may look similar, they can be quite different when it comes to the more detailed tasks they can perform.

Coding standards are basically a collection of guidelines but it is important that these guidelines suit the specific project. Some standards require that coding standards be used. The automotive functional safety standard ISO 26262, for example, not only insists on the use of a coding standard but recommends MISRA C. Others, such as ISO/IEC TS 17961: 2013, have secure coding rules within them.

Selecting the right coding standard is an essential building block for safe and secure coding. This white paper looks more closely at the details that need to be considered so that the coding standard chosen is fit for purpose.
