Signal Chain Simplification – the Challenges of Moving the ADC Inputs to the Left

In signal flow graphs where inputs start on the left side and flow to outputs on the right, a typical signal chain starts with a sensor, voltage, or other current input and flows from left to right through an interface amplifier, a signal conditioning block, an ADC Driver, an ADC Input Filter, and finally to the inputs of an ADC which outputs a digital representation of the original input signal to a digital processor. Most systems have plenty of processing power available in the microcontroller, microprocessor, or DSP to replace some or all of the circuits ahead of the ADC by converting them into calculations in the digital domain but this transformation is happening slowly if at all.

This webinar will look at the benefits associated with transforming the signal chain through the use of software as well as the practical aspects that prevent the user from fully realizing the benefits based on real world product choices that need to be considered in fully transforming a signal chain to its simplest implementation of a combined Sensor Interface Amplifier/ADC Driver and an ADC. It will also look at what challenges companies like ADI will have to overcome to enable this approach.
